The Deal Leader

July 2026 | Volume 62

4 Successful Transactions
in the First Half of 2026

The first half of 2026 has been an exceptionally active period for Deal Leaders International, with four successful transactions completed across the software, manufacturing, mining services and industrial distribution sectors.

Each transaction was different, but together they send a clear message to business owners considering a sale: quality South African businesses continue to attract strong buyer interest when they are well prepared and taken to market through a disciplined sale process.

While economic conditions remain challenging and buyers continue to be selective, our experience this year shows that businesses with strong fundamentals, differentiated market positions and credible growth opportunities are still commanding significant attention. More importantly, these four transactions reinforced that successful exits are rarely the result of timing or luck alone. They are achieved through careful preparation, strategic positioning and identifying the buyer best placed to unlock long-term value.

Quality Businesses Continue to Command Interest

The diversity of these four transactions demonstrates that buyer appetite extends well beyond any single sector.

One transaction involved a specialist software business serving the financial services market. Its proprietary technology, valuable intellectual property and long-standing client relationships attracted interest from both international software companies and strategic local acquirers.

The structured sale process generated multiple offers, giving the shareholders genuine choice. While valuation was important, the preferred buyer was ultimately selected because of cultural alignment, confidence in the future leadership team and a shared strategic vision that positioned the business for continued growth.

Another transaction involved a specialist manufacturing business operating in a highly competitive market. Rather than being a quick sale, it reflected years of preparation. Feedback from previous market engagements helped strengthen reporting systems, improve operational structures and better align management, making the business significantly more attractive to buyers.

By the time the right strategic partner emerged, the business was well positioned to deliver an outcome that met both the shareholders' commercial objectives and their long-term aspirations.

Experience Matters in Complex Industries

The sale of a specialist drilling and blasting business highlighted another important lesson for business owners considering an exit.

Capital-intensive industries often present challenges that less experienced buyers struggle to evaluate. Significant investment in specialised equipment, together with contract-based revenue, can make these businesses appear more complex than they really are.

Rather than pursuing the highest offer, DLI focused on identifying a buyer with genuine industry expertise who understood the commercial realities of the sector. The successful acquirer recognised the long-term value and growth potential of the business, resulting in a transaction built on strategic alignment, trust and a realistic understanding of the industry.

Finding the Right Strategic Partner

The fourth transaction involved a respected industrial distribution business with a strong reputation for technical expertise, product quality and long-standing customer relationships.

Having built the business over many years, the owner wanted more than a financial buyer. They wanted a strategic partner capable of supporting the next phase of growth while preserving the company's market position and culture.

DLI implemented a structured market process that generated interest from multiple qualified buyers, creating healthy competitive tension while allowing the client to assess each opportunity on both commercial and strategic merits. The result was a successful transaction that positions the business for continued growth under new ownership.

Different Businesses, Common Lessons

Although these transactions spanned four very different industries, they all reinforced the same important themes.

Firstly, quality South African businesses continue to attract strong buyer interest despite broader economic uncertainty. Buyers remain willing to invest where they see capable management teams, differentiated market positions, recurring customer relationships and credible growth opportunities.

Secondly, preparation remains one of the greatest drivers of value. Businesses that understand their strengths, address potential concerns early and present a compelling growth story consistently achieve stronger outcomes than those relying solely on historical financial performance.

Finally, successful transactions depend on finding the right buyer, not simply the first buyer. Every acquirer brings a different perspective. Some value international expansion opportunities, while others focus on operational synergies, sector expertise or cultural alignment. The most successful outcomes occur when both parties share a strategic vision for the future of the business.

These four transactions demonstrate that, while market conditions may fluctuate, well-prepared businesses with strong fundamentals continue to attract quality buyers. For business owners considering an exit, the message is clear: preparation, positioning and the right advisory process remain the foundations of a successful sale.

Selling a business is rarely as simple as finding a buyer and signing an agreement. The reality is that many deals fail long before they reach the finish line because owners underestimate the preparation, positioning, buyer dynamics and execution required to achieve a successful outcome.

In this practical discussion, Business & Financial Journalist Michael Avery speaks with DLI's Andrew Bahlmann and Rick Grantham, who share real-world insights gained from advising and selling engineering, manufacturing and mining services businesses.
